The mission of the section is to serve as a main national center for scientific research in military history, to provide specialized military history expertise, to conduct training and postgraduate qualification in military history at the College, and to support military-patriotic education in the Bulgarian Army and among the younger generation.

1. Researches wars and military conflicts involving the armed forces and the Bulgarian army;
2. Researches historical traditions in military policy, strategy, operational art, construction, and development of the Bulgarian Armed Forces;
3. Researches the military history and traditions of the Bulgarian Army and their application to the development of military theory and practice;
4. Participates in the planning and implementation of the military history training process at the Rakovski National Defence College;
5. Provides specialized expertise for the military-patriotic education of military personnel and citizens;
6. Conducts research and provides scientific expertise to support the preservation and affirmation of the military traditions, values, rituals, and symbols of the Bulgarian Army;
7. Provides expertise for the promotion of the military-historical heritage and military glory of the Bulgarian Army;
8. Provides specialized scientific expertise to counter attempts to falsify the national military-historical heritage;
9. Provides military history expertise on issues of national military history for various users;
10. Participates in the educational process at the Rakovski National Defence College, independently and/or jointly with other educational units of the College;
11. Provides training for obtaining an educational and scientific degree of „doctor“ in accredited doctoral programs;
12. Provides information in the section „Doctrines, Concepts, and Lessons Learned“ for building and maintaining a database for systematizing, storing, and using lessons learned and experience from the history of the armed forces and the Bulgarian army;
13. Organizes and conducts national and international scientific forums on issues of military and military-political history
14. Participates in scientific research and research projects of the DARI with structures from the armed forces and the Bulgarian army;
15. Participates in national and allied research projects in the field of military history, defence, and national security;
16. Conducts scientific and applied research, analyses, and proposals for improving the plans, programs, and quality of training at the Provides training for obtaining an educational and scientific degree of „doctor“ in accredited doctoral programs;

21. Conducts scientific and applied research, analyses, and proposals for improving the plans, programs, and quality of training at the Rakovski National Defence College.
